St. Catharines, Ontario

When did your family move to this place and why?

I moved to Niagara Falls, Ontario, in 2018 on my own after being accepted to Niagara College. It was my first major step toward independence and personal growth. I wanted to pursue higher education in a welcoming and diverse community, and Niagara Falls offered the right balance between opportunity and a supportive environment for newcomers.

How has this history affected your life and perspective?

Living in Niagara Falls has greatly influenced my outlook on diversity, inclusion, and community. Being surrounded by people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds helped me develop strong communication skills, empathy, and cultural awareness. Living alone in a new country taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of building meaningful relationships. These experiences shaped my personal values and later guided my leadership and professional approach.

What is your gender (if you are comfortable disclosing)?

I identify as a cisgender man.

What is your generational status: 1st generation in Canada, 2nd generation, and so on?

I am a first-generation Canadian, having received my citizenship in 2025. This milestone represents not only legal recognition but also a deep sense of belonging and achievement after years of hard work and personal growth. Becoming a citizen strengthened my commitment to contribute positively to my community and to uphold the values of equality, inclusion, and respect that define Canada.

Berlin, Germany

When did your family move to this place and why?

I moved to Berlin in 2018 and lived there for 4 years. I originally went there on a working holiday visa just to experience living in a different country and to travel, but I found a job in my field and my employer sponsored me to get a longer work permit.

How has this history affected your life and perspective?

Before I lived in Europe, I always thought that the culture in European countries would be very similar to Canada, but I realized how different the cultures are in each European country. This experience allowed me to work with colleagues from many different places in the world, and to learn about different norms and employment laws in many different countries. It also opened my eyes to different ways of doing things. Based on what I was taught growing up in Canada, I always thought that Canada was the best country in the world to live in. I realize now that there are many things that other countries do better than Canada, for example the education systems in Germany and in the Nordic countries.

What is your gender (if you are comfortable disclosing)?

Female

What is your generational status: 1st generation in Canada, 2nd generation, and so on?

4th generation

When did your family move to this place and why?

We moved to this place in 1988. My father had been transferred from Toronto to Sarnia at his job with Via four years earlier. When we had moved to the area my parents had bought a house, and were able to move into a larger house.

How has this history affected your life and perspective?

We moved to a small community on the outskirts of a relatively small city when I was just starting school. Growing up in an area limited the amount of diversity that I experienced. I would say that the cultural makeup likely aligned with national averages – there were visible minorities of various ethnicities in the area where I grew up. However, most of the visible minorities were professionals and their families who had recently come to the area to work in the petrochemical industry that dominates the area. So, while I grew up in a somewhat ethnically diverse area, the socioeconomic background of the various ethnicities didn’t necessarily align with the broader Canadian makeup.

What is your gender (if you are comfortable disclosing)?

Male

What is your generational status: 1st generation in Canada, 2nd generation, and so on?

Members of my family came to Canada prior to confederation. I can’t find anyone in a family tree that wasn’t born in Canada.
